Russian holiday Maslenitsa (Pancake Day)

The Pancake Day - Maslenitsa - February 27 till the beginning of March

Maslenitsa, also known as Butter Week or Pancake Week, is a Russian religious and folk holiday, an ancient tradition with pagan and Orthodox Christian meaning. It is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent - that is, the seventh week before Paskha (Easter). The Orthodox date of Easter differs greatly from the Western Christian date.

To understand a mysterious Russian soul and to see the Russian prowess, daredevilry, and famous hospitality you should partake in Maslenitsa holiday.

Historical note

During Soviet period, Maslenitsa, like many other religious holidays, was officially not observed. It was, however, widely celebrated in families without its religious meaning, just as an occasion to invite the relatives and friends for the pancakes with all sorts of fillings and coverings. After Perestroika, this almost dead tradition was revived and officially resumed.

Origins of this holiday -
Maslenitsa has a dual descent: pagan and Christian. On the one hand,  Maslenitsa is an ancient Slavonic holiday, the legacy from the pagan culture. This is a merry sendoff of the long-annoying winter, a sun festival, mischievous celebrating the approach of the spring, warmth and renovation of the nature.  Maslenitsa marks the start of the agricultural cycle, and is very much tied to the idea of death and renewal, waking the land up. From times immemorial pagan Russians considered spring as the beginning of new life and revered the Sun as a God giving life and energy to the whole creation.

On the other hand, Maslenitsa precedes the onset of Orthodox Christian Great Lent. In old time the last week before the Lent was called “Miasopust” (Meat-empty Week) because it was forbidden to eat meat during this time. In this meaning, Maslenitsa is like a carnival for the Italians, especially because the initial sense of festivals is the same: the Italian word ‘carnival’ (carne-vale) means “farewell the beef!”  Moreover, the Great Lent prohibits music, dance and other entertainments, and Maslenitsa was the last chance to take part in such activities before the prayerful Lenten time.

Russian customs of the celebration  -
Each day of Maslenitsa Week has its own name and certain rites, most of them related to family affairs and marriage. The week was spent in visits to relatives, and newlywed couples were greeted with various ceremonies.

Monday is called vstrechameeting, welcoming. People build the ice-hills, snow fortresses, and seesaws. They make of straw effigy of Lady Maslenitsa, dress it in old, ugly clothes and put it at the top of the snow hill.
Women started baking pancakes, and the first pancakes were traditionally given to the beggars.

Tuesday is called zaigrysh - playing. Russians invite their relatives and friends to chute ice-hills and eat pancakes. Boys get horse whistles (symbolized strength).

Wednesday is called lakomka – gourmand. The mothers-in-law invite their sons-in-law for a visit and they treat to the daughter’s family with bliny, which should be cooked with special delicate fillings, such as mushrooms or caviar.

Thursday is called razgul – revelry, merrymaking. Russians indulged in all kinds of entertainments  - ice-hills, snowball fights,  and carnivals.  They ride on the traditional Russian troika (a horse-drawn sledge), go round on a giant carousel, sing with garmoshka (kind of accordion) a lot of Russian sprightly chastushki (gaily songs). Skomorokhs and petrushkas (Russian clowns) will make people laugh to tears in the balagans (Punch-and-Judy shows) and street theatres. Street stalls are opened, selling  sbiten’ (a hot toddy from honey, water and spices). Here one can see the traditional Russian samovars with mellow tea, bunches of sweet-scented baranki (kind of round cracknel), vatrushki (curd tarts), prianiki (honey cakes), pirogi (pies), and, of course, bliny everywhere at the street festivities. All Russian cities jingle with bells, sing and glare with gaily-painted dresses this day.
It is a custom to do various actions associated with a circle, such as dancing the round dance – khorovod, decorating a cart wheel – karusel’- and carrying it on a pole along the streets, going on horseback around the settlement several times. According pagan Russian belief, these rites should to cajole –  to butter - the Sun  and to make it kinder.

Friday is called teshchiny vecherki - mother-in-law’s party. Now it was the turn of the sons-in-law to invite their mothers-in-law and treat them with pancakes.

Saturday  is called zolovkiny posidelki - sister-in-law’s party. Young wives invite their sisters-in-law for a feast and they are supposed to give presents to her husband’s sisters.

The last day of Maslenitsa is called  Proshchennoe Voskresenie  - Forgiveness Sunday. On this day, Russians each other’s forgiveness to be freed from sins before the Lent. In response they hear the traditional “God will forgive”. People went to cemeteries and left pancakes on the graves of their ancestors.
On that day the feasting and drinking ends up and Russians say goodbye to winter until the next year. On Sunday evening, the straw Lady Maslenitsa is paraded to the edge of the village or city, stripped of her finery and burned. Any bliny, which have escaped thus far, are also thrown on the fire with the words: “Burn, pancake, burn, Maslenitsa!” A wooden wheel, symbolizing the sun-disk, was also often burned alongside the effigy, leading to the idea that this festival was celebrated in connection with the spring equinox  (on March 22) in pre-Christian times. The rite of burning the effigy is related to the both pagan and Christian idea of revival through sacrifice and death; it stands for the revival of fruit-bearing powers of nature, the renewal of its life power.

                                                                               Symbols of Maslenitsa

The name of the holiday, Maslenitsa, derived from maslo (means butter), which is used for the baking the
traditional bliny - pancakes. Round, golden and hot bliny are the essential element of this holiday and they
symbolizethe Sun. They are made from the rich foods still allowed by the Orthodox tradition – eggs, butter, and milk.

                                                         – Geographical facts

At 17075400 square kilometres (6592800 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than a ninth of the Earth’s land area.

Russia is known as the “lungs of Europe” since it has the largest forest reserves in the world, and the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by it is second only to the rainforests in the Amazon. These forests of Russia provide large amounts of oxygen not only to Europe but also to the world.  On the territory of Russia there are 100 reserves, total area of which makes 33.55 mln ha, and 35 national parks with total area of 6.96 mln ha.

The Baikal is the deepest and cleanest lake in the world; it is a large reservoir of fresh water on the Earth. There is none similar to the open reservoir of fresh water in the world, like Lake Baikal. Its water has high quality taste and is very much like spring water. It has many healthy properties due to the high concentration of oxygen.  Baikal Lake area is 31.5 thousand sq km. This great and enigmatic lake with the soul of an ocean, Lake Baikal, is located in the southern part of East Siberia. Local people historically name this lake Baikal as a sea.   There isn't a single Russian that doesn’t know the wonderful song “Nice sea, sacred Baikal” :
(It is presented by Red Army Choir and Orchestra & Sergei Nazarko)

The Ural mountains are ones of the first mountains in the world.

Russians call these mountains “the stone belt”, and some of European people call them “the belt of the world”, because Ural is the boundary between Europe and Asia.

the monument symbolized the split of Europe and Asia

For Russians, Ural is a jewellery box with precious stones, because more than 200 minerals and precious stones are in the depths of these mountains.

Some of these include -  rock crystals,

asbestos (In Greek, it means “indestructible”. By the way, this mineral doesn’t burn, and to rip a fibre of it is almost the same as ripping a wire),

malachite (It is very hard to make something out of it because it is very fragile, but Russian craft-makers make astonishing expensive jewellery out of it nonetheless),

beryl, jasper, zircon, gold, copper, and marble.

It is on its banks that Russian culture and nation that was born.  The Volga River rises northwest of Moscow and extends southward some 3700 km through the whole central part of the country where it pours into the Caspian, forming a delta of about 800 smaller waterways.

In December 1825, tsar Nikolai I, who didn’t have the lush hair,  has ascended on the imperial throne of the Russian Imperia. Since then, there is a clear alternation of bald and hairy top officials - first kings, then the general secretaries and now presidents. This paradox is only broken by Andropov and Chernenko, each of which has an initial stage of baldness. As they were in power for a very short time, they can be neglected.
