Russian children's songs with translation

The Russian 1970s was a period of the intensive flowering of both the children’s  films and children’s song. The eminent professional composers, such as Mark Minkov, Aleksey Rybnikov, Maksim Dunaevskiy, David Tukhmanov,  Vladimir Shainskiy, Gennadiy Gladkov, and Evgeniy Krylatov, wrote numerous songs for the children’s chorus, children’s movies, and cartoon films. Almost each new nascent song became a hit on the next day of its performance.

Children’s songs sounded everywhere for a whole day – at schools, on the radio, on TV, at children’s theatres, and outside. The records with children’s songs were like hot cakes. The schoolteachers, babysitters, parents and grandparents studied these songs with their kids, and any concert - be it public or home - couldn’t be without the performance of children’s songs.

After the perestroika, along with the entering Russia into the capitalism with its uncontrollable commerce, all children’s film studios and children’s chorus’ collapsed and disappeared. Today nobody writes new children’s songs, but kids (together with their parents) continue to learn and  to sing old famous children’s songs.

Cheburashkas Song

Some comments:
If you talk to any Russians of any generation (from 1960s up until now), their faces will light up if you mention Cheburashka. The star of a children’s book  (which was created in 1970 by Eduard Uspenskiy) and the animated film series, Cheburashka is as beloved in the east as Winnie the Pooh and the Muppets are in the west.

In the book version Cheburashka is some kind of magical forest animal; in the animated version it’s suggested that he’s a talking toy. Cheburashka is not a personal name; it is a species name invented by the director of the shop, where he was found. The salesmen took the animal out of a crate of oranges and sat him on the table, but his paws were numb after the long time spent in the crate and he tumbled down ("cheburakhnulsia", a Russian colloquialism, “tumbled” in English). The director of the shop, who saw it, called him Cheburashka. The words with this root were obsolete in Russian; Uspenskiy gave them a new life.

Once I was such a strange toy,
I didn’t have a name.
So no one in the toy store
Would ever talk to me.
But now I’m Cheburashka
And every little doggy
Which meets me...
Promptly...
Gives his paw to me!

At first I wasn’t lucky -
It didn’t make me happy,
That when it was my birthday,
Nobody came to me.
But now I’m friends with Genna
He is not ordinary,
But only...
The best...
Crocodile in the world!

“Let the pedestrians run clumsily over the puddles”
.  Some comments:
This is the second song from the cartoon series of Cheburashka, which has been very popular among Russians of various ages and generations. It was written by composer Vladimir Shainskiy and the poet Alexander Timofeevskiy in 1971. Since that time it become more commonly known as the “Crocodile Gena’s Song” or “Birthday song” because crocodile Gena, the best friend of Cheburashka, played on his accordion and sangs this song one rainy day, which happens to be his birthday.

Let them run awkwardly
Stepping over puddles,
The water will flow like a river.
And it’s not clear to the passers-by
On this unbearable day
Why I’m so happy.

Refrain:
I play the accordion
In view of the passers-by.
It’s a pity, that a birthday
Is only once a year.

Suddenly a wizard flies
In a light blue helicopter
And shows a free movie.
He’s stopping by for the birthday,
And he’ll probably leave
Me a present of 500 Eskimo bars.

Winged swing
Some comments:
This song was written by the venerable composer Evgeniy Krylatov and  famous children’s poet Yuriy Entin for the children’s movie “The Adventures of the Electronic” in 1980.
This movie probably had more influence on the kids in the entire former Soviet Union than any other. It was about a robot called Electronic constructed by  Professor Gromov  and  it looks exactly like Sergey Syroezhkibn, a 6-grader from one of  USSR’s  schools.

In the young month,  in April,
Snow  thaws in the old park.
And winged swing
Start its running.
Everything was forgotten,
A heart sinks in the chest –
Only sky, only wind,
And only happiness ahead.

Refrain:
Soaring up higher than the
                    pine-trees and
Not having any barriers,
The winged swing is flying,
                       flying, flying.

Childhood will come to
                         an end some time,
You know, it isn’t forever.
The kids become the adults?
They will fly away in various
                               directions.
But for the time being we are
                                 only kids
And we will grow up
       and grow up as yet.
Only sky, only wind,
And only happiness ahead.

  Refrain:

The globe is whirling faster
      because of the spring bustle,
And the birds are singing happily,
And we are singing like the birds.
Everything was forgotten,
A heart sinks in the chest –
Only sky, only wind,
And only happiness ahead.

 Refrain:

White Clouds”

Some comments:
The composer Vladimir Shainskiy and multiplier Sergey Kozlov for the remarkably kind cartoon “Трям- здравствуй!” (“Triam is hello!”) wrote this song in 1983. Although the animated film and a song were assumed for very little kids, they won the sympathy of people of any age and are still popular.

Rolling by the white apple
             of moon and
Rolling by the red apple
                            of sunset
The clouds from the
           unknown country
Hurry to us and then they
             run somewhere.

                                            Refrain:
White clouds are like small
                white-maned horses.
White clouds, why do you rush
     without a backward glance?
Don’t look at us haughtily,
                                   please,
But let roll us by the sky,
                  white clouds.

We will rush to the beyond
      the clouds  distance,
Rolling by the faded stars
                               on the sky.
The star will noiselessly
                          fall down
 to our palms
And  it will turn into a comomile.

                        Refrain:
